Is it Christmas yet? The Optimist's getting rather excited about the prospect of a festive cinema trip to see Disney's newest live-action delight, Saving Mr. Banks.
The film, starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, tells the surprising story of Mary Poppins author P. L. Travers and her battle against Walt's tendency to make things twinkle. The trailer sees Hanks on top form as Mr. Disney himself, attempting to convince Thompson's Travers to part with the rights to her book so that the studios can make the film that the world would later fall in love with.
The spiky Mrs. Travers won't stand for the sing-song circus that Disney proposes though, refusing to let Mary become another one of his sugar-coated confections, and the film maker comes to realise that the author's reasons for protecting her magical nanny may be more emotional than he'd imagined.
Apparently the film will offer a glimpse into Travers' own childhood so that we can see where the inspiration behind the world's most famous governess came from. Although it won't be out for another five months (at the earliest) it's clear from the trailer that this film may alter our idea of Mary Poppins forever - a window into an unseen history, that drips with that familiar Disney warmth.
