Lucy Rhiannon
Recently, The Optimist was invited to the city of Manchester to see singer/songwriter Lucy Rhiannon's latest gig. Join me for a reflection on a wonderful evening of Sangria and songs.
A crowded room in the shadow of Manchester's towering Hilton Hotel on a sticky Saturday night may not sound like a great place to spend an evening, but if that's where Lucy Rhiannon's singing, that's where you'll want to be. The 21-year-old has been gigging around Manchester and up and down the country for the last two years and she's already made quite a name for herself. Along with her own shows, she's supported the likes of Ren Harvieu and played sessions for BBC Introducing who have tipped her as "one to watch".
Saturday's gig was a laid back affair as Lucy added the soulful tone that has become her trademark, to a collection of popular songs, alongside her guitarist Laurence. The audience relaxed with their drinks as Lucy's voice washed over tracks by the likes of Nina Simone and she adapted a variety of contemporary pop songs in her own unique way. Highlights included her gorgeous take on Paolo Nutini's Candy, an accomplished cover of Wildest Moments by Jessie Ware and a refreshingly original acoustic version of Daft Punk's Get Lucky. As intrigued passers-by dropped in to listen, they were treated to a few songs penned by the lady herself, including her newest offering Chains. Something of a departure from her previous material, this new track feels more urban than her past efforts, but still manages to retain Lucy's signature retro sound.
When she's not performing, you'll find the songstress in the studio where she's currently recording her début album with producer Simon Dine, known for his work with Paul Weller. To see some of Lucy's past performances, search her name on Youtube.
Alternatively, you can follow @lucyrhiannonhop for future gig listings and all the latest from this up and coming talent.
Thanks for inviting us Lucy, we'll be back for the next gig!
