Central Perk

We're just a month away from the tenth anniversary of the final episode of Friends. It was broadcast on Thursday May 6th 2004 - can you believe it's been that long? Ten years since Rachel got off the plane, ten years since Chandler and Monica had their babies and ten years since the gang last met up for coffee. If you too are a fan of caffeine-laden beverages and you're still struggling to cope with your Friends withdrawals, The Optimist knows a place you might just want to visit.

There's a candy striped canopy overhanging one of the shop fronts on Chester's Bridge Street, and an enticing orange glow coming from inside. It's a coffee shop you've visited a million times before, but you've never stopped for a drink. Well now, you can. For Central Perk has come to the UK and it's a real-life café! You might get a goosebump or two when you step onto its persian rugs and see the familiar velvet couch and marble countertop for the first time - this place has been seriously well-done; from the branded mugs to the flowers on the table - the only thing missing is Gunther.

As if the decor weren't enough, you can order New York style baked cheesecake and Joey's signature blend of coffee among a plethora of other goodies, and you can enjoy them while you watch episodes of the show, which are played on screens across the café throughout the day. There's merchandise for sale too (my favourite is the replica of the photoframe that hung over the peephole in Monica and Rachel's apartment) and they stock a selection of classic American sweets. Wednesday night's are open mic, when the musicians of Chester showcase their talents - and although Phoebe may not be performing you can bet someone will crack out a rendition of Smelly Cat at some pointI'm rather excited about their Friends themed quiz nights (also on Wednesdays). Beware the lightning round though - apartments have been lost through irresponsible play.
